How it works

Clobetasol propionate is a highly active corticosteroid with topical anti-inflammatory activity. The major effect of clobetasol propionate on skin is a non-specific anti-inflammatory response, partially due to vasoconstriction and decrease in collagen synthesis. The use of nystatin in the local treatment of candidal infections of the skin and of neomycin as a broad-spectrum antibiotic is well known. The principle action of the preparation is based on the anti-inflammatory activity of the corticosteroid. The broad spectrum antibacterial and anti-candidal activity provided by the combination of neomycin and nystatin allow this effect to be utilized in the treatment of condition which are or are likely to become infected.

PRECAUTIONS

Precaution

Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with the use of antibiotics and may range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider its diagnosis in patients who develop diarrhoea during or after antibiotic use. Although this is less likely to occur with topically applied neomycin, if prolonged or significant diarrhoea occurs or the patient experiences abdominal cramps, treatment should be discontinued immediately, and the patient investigated further.

WARNINGS

Warning 1

Local hypersensitivity reactions may resemble symptoms of the condition under treatment . If signs of hypersensitivity appear, application should be stopped immediately.

Warning 2

Application to the face is undesirable as, more than other areas of the body, this area may exhibit atrophic changes after prolonged treatment with potent topical corticosteroids. If used on the face, treatment should be limited to only a few days. This must be borne in mind when treating such conditions as psoriasis and severe eczema.

Warning 3

If applied to the eyelids, care is needed to ensure that the preparation does not enter the eye, as cataract and glaucoma might result from repeated exposure. If the ointment does enter the eye, the affected eye should be bathed in copious amounts of water.
