  • Panic Disorder: Management of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Management of post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Nausea
    • Dizziness
    • Drowsiness or insomnia
    • Dry mouth
    • Sweating
    • Constipation or diarrhea
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weight gain or loss
    • Sexual dysfunction (e.g., decreased libido, difficulty achieving orgasm)
  • Serious Side Effects:

    • Suicidal thoughts and behavior, particularly in young adults and adolescents
    • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include confusion, agitation, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, muscle rigidity, and sweating)
    • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing)
    • Hyponatremia (low blood sodium levels)
    • Eye pain, vision changes, or swelling/redness in or around the eye

Precautions:

  • Medical History: Inform your healthcare provider of your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of bipolar disorder, liver or kidney disease, seizures, glaucoma, heart problems, or bleeding disorders.
  • Monitoring: Regularly monitor mental health, especially when starting or changing the dose, due to the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and drowsiness.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Paroxetine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
  • Interactions: Inform your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as paroxetine can interact with many other drugs, particularly other antidepressants, antiplatelet drugs, NSAIDs, blood thinners, and certain other medications.
  • Gradual Discontinuation: Do not stop taking Paroxin CR suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider. Gradual dose reduction is necessary to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
